1992 E36 Drivers Window Problem

Hi Guys, just found your forum last nite think its great.
But I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 1992 320i, my problem being that the drivers window seems to go up and down in 2 inch stages. Now what may be the cause is the fact that the window when fully closed has about a half an inch gap between the (if looking from the outside of the car) top left corner of the window and the edge of the window groove on the door (i hope that makes sense). This does not cause any leaking problems, but is a huge pain when trying to open the window, any suggestions?

You have to remove door panel and look from inside. The glass itself may be missplased or the window regulator may be screwd up.
