Hello everybody. I have recently purchased my second e36 in 328 coupe format. The OBC is new to me but the 328 had the 11 button unit with check control fitted as standard. However, the display was well and truly broke so I sourced an 18 button unit thinking it would be a simple case of plug and play. Alas no. Two sockets on 18 button as opposed to the one on the 11 button. Can I or shall I spend the rest of my life wiring up the full OBC and if so HOW? Or should I just get a replacement 11 button unit? Bearing in mind the upgrade would be a bonus... THANKS

Did you ever have any luck with this? I'm facing the same problem with my 95 M3 and was hoping to swap for the full OBC too....

I have seen a DIY on how to do this. I read through it and it looks like a pain in the ass. It really did not seem like it is worth it. I wanted to do it from the Cheap 6 button Time and Temp display. You have to splice everything your self. Pain in the ass. But there are instructions on how to do it. Unfortunately I do not have the link, but I know some one on this site has the link.

I'd forget about converting to the 18 button control.
At the end of the day it's just not worth the money, hassle, headache, pain in the ass, and aggrevation. You'll always have something go wrong or not working.
Either live with the 11 button control, which isn't bad at all ... or sell the car and buy another with the 18 button controls.

Just my 2 cents

Here are some links for the conversion and it is not such a PAIN in the ass as you say.
Did it on mine and except the Check Control (that I do not have in my car) everything works ok.
You must go , with the new OBC installed in the car , to a BMW dealer to programm it for your engine.
