Hello everyone, Im new to the boards, so I figured I should make a formal hello.

I currenty own a 1987 Mercedes 420 SEL and a 1989 Jeep Cherokee, and I am in the market for a 318i for a good deal.

I am very dedicated to building a nice M3 clone - basically a 318 with an M3 engine for a nice sleeper setup .

I found a nice running 318 for cheap somewhat nearby, and I have found a few sites that sell rebuilt M3 engines, for well, not so cheap, but I am willing to shell out the dough.

The question I had, hoping someone could answer, is if I would need to upgrade the rear axle to a LSD, or if the stock one can take the M3 engine as it is. Basically, what separates the M3 drivetrain from the 318 or 325 besides the engine, transmission, and emblems? I am guessing new shocks/struts are a must, as well as some upgraded swaybars. Anything else I should watch out for?

Thanks in advance.

The M3 is not just the engine. It's chassis dynamics and the engine combined that make it into an awesome car. If you want an M3 save your cash, then buy the best one you can find.

if you want a fast car i suggest either saving up and buying an M3 or buying a 325i or iS and just build up the 2.5L I-6...and slap a 318 badge on it LoL just a though

I knew there was going to be a lot to it, and thinking about it now, it seems like for the price of building one up, I could get an E30 M3 anyway. Thanks for the input though, and Ill let you guys know what I end up getting, if anything.
