Won't shift to reverse!!

Hi I bought a 325is 88 std. didn't start, slowly I have put all the pieces tougether AND Finally It starts fine. The car was parked since 2005. The car won't engage on reverse, it always engage on 1st gear. I need to replace guibo dirk & center console/ driveshaft bearing. It tumbles and sounds very bad but it engage fine on at least 1, 2 and 3. So i belive it will run OK on 1,2,3,4,5 they all engage but NO REverse what could be the situation ?? Does anyone experienced similar problem?? I just acquire tilte. I haven't drive it fast enought to shift higher than 3rd gear. any guess??

change the alternator on ur ignition system. and for transmission issues change the gearbox fluid.

Hi, I have the same reverse problem in my 1990 e30 and still cant get to a solution, not even thinking of visiting a transmission speciallist because i know i will get ripped off and wont get it fixed...

When you have it in 1st gear, how much side to side play is there in the shifter? If there is more than 1/2" then the shift linkage is worn. It may be worn enough to not allow it to go into reverse (or even 5th or 1st sometimes).

You can replace the linkage obviously, but I have had luck drilling out the plastic part and inserting a 1/2" tube spacer.
