1. You can try it (ensure your check engine bulb isn't burnt out).
2. Someone with a car close to yours will speak up with an answer.
3. You can open the glove box, remove some screws to take down the plastic panel below the dash, and then remove the four 10mm screws securing your ECU to the bracket and write down the ECU number on the colored sticker. Then compare your part number to this list:

The stomp test works with this unit (Motronic 1.3), as well as the 1.7 ECU in my 91 318i.
