When to rebuild? - BMW Forum

Well I'm 20 years old and my first car I got was a 1984 325e. I got it for free from some dude I did a job for. His hobby was to race porches as such and I think he used this cars as his daily beater. Well it has about 199000 miles on it and I beleive its in bad shape cause me learning to drive stick didn't help at all. Speedo/odometer doesn't work, needs new passenger window motor, sunroof stopped working. heater works only on high(4) postion. I just replaced muffler O2 sensor and wiper motor. Also I got some ghetto fab (for free also)body work done to pass the emmissions safety test. But I believe I need a rebuild because lots of smoke pours out of the muffler. Especially when I start it up. It has gotten to the point where I won't drive it during the day cause its so embarassing. How much should I expect to pay for an engine rebuild. Parts and labor. I live in Massachusetts it that would help getting a more accurate price

Sounds like a good porject car, I unno anything about how much money you are gonna be lookin at puttin in to get it nice, but it will probably be a lot, someone else will have a better estimate im sure..

I dont know about your engine problems, but id bet money that the cause of your blower only working on high is due to the small circuit board underneath your blower motor needs to have the contacts cleaned on it. Seems to be a common problem.

I should of taken care of that when I replaced the wiper motor

Does anyone know anything about NECO Engines. I got an estimate from them saying it will cost roughly $2900.00 . That seems about right ?

I had the same problem with the blower only working at 4. There is a resistor mounted on the motor itself and the resistor usually blows out. Its a common repair. I think a new resistor will cost about $15-20.

Sounds about right, had mine rebuilt (M10) for $2500 with HP cam, springs/retainers, adj. timing gear, port/polish head, and all the usuals that go with a rebuild

as far as your engine rebuild project... first determine whether or not you're willing to spend that much money, not only on an old car, but an old e30 :P ... now don't get me wrong, i have an '87 eta & love it to death, but i DEFINITLY wouldn't blow away almost 3 GRAND on the engine just to make it run good & keep it stock... i'd look into upgrades like the 2.7i project that i'm hoping to do next summer

there's plenty of options out there that'll cost you alot less, or alot more (but w/ a thousand reasons to do so), depending on what you wanna do (ie, engine transplant

PS... yo'ure lucky you said you're from mass in the last second... if not i probably woulda just been like "dude, you're an idiot... who the hell would spend almost 3 grand just to rebuild a slow engine?"... but i gotta take care of my Masshole brethren
