What's wrong with my car?

My 1989 325i (1.3 Motronic system) will start up fine and run perfect until it approaches operating temperature. At this point it loses power, runs erradically, backfires and even stalls at idle. There is NO CHECK ENGINE light however which narrows the possibilities a bit. Suggestions?

How old are the fuel injectors? A look at this article has some ideas.

Possibly cat pluged up ive run into that with the l-jetronics before.

same thing happened to my managers saturn turns out it was the coolant temp. sensor but I'm sure german engineering is much better than GM

My Saab 900 SE Turbo did that when it had a clogged cat, it would stall out if I stopped after operating temp, Power would drop under hard acceleration and it would stink life sulfur or rotten eggs on hill or if the motor was under load for over 15 seconds. Also check to see if you cat glows after a good hard drive... The check engine light won't come on in an OBD0 or OBD1 car if the Cat is bad...
