what is this thing called?

first off i have a 84 318i

you know where the fuel pump is located like next to it the is this kinda small wierd round thing. well i dont know whats it called and i have to change it because i have a hole in mine.

Fuel filter?

Its either the fuel filter if it's a silver cylinder looking thing, or it the fuel accumilator this is a little smaller than the filter and should be around the same size as the pump

i found out whats it called its a Fuel Pressure Damper.
it cost about 45 bucks for a new one well do i need it cause right now i just connected the to tubes together without it.
is it really important?

Yes it's important. It was designed into the system as a whole and unless you are an engineer I would recommend replacing it. The Robert Bosch Corp knows what it was thinking when it designed the fuel system.
