well, you would most likely need the tranny, but M20, S50, S52...
the engine bays are a decent size, and i know for a fact that all those conversions have been done

You could drop an ETA in there fairly easily. Just replace the electronics with those from the donor car, and swap the engine. Don't the transmissions bolt up to all M20 blocks?

Changed the car's name, now it's - Roxanne -1985 325e
ETA is a 6 banger from the E30's (325's)....i am in the process of doing that swap right now.....check it a few threads down

eta is a 2.7 liter engine, revs really low and almost feels like a diesel in the way and ammount of torque it produces. its a fun "around town" zippy engine because of all the low down torque it produces. the eta is also a very good base for improvement if you have a little wallet and imagination. That, and replace the con-rod bolts and check all the bearings. Then, go wring the hell out of it and enjoy. =)
my first mods to mine are chip, and lightened flywheel......it will be getting a "cat-less" exhaust to free things up a bit more as well......
if she proves to me to be worth dumping more money into vs. selling, i will be looking into a diesel crank, I top end, and turbo.....
