What Model Is My E30???

Hello everyone,

I have a 1986 coupe - Believed to be an E30 M325i

The diff ratio tag number is 3.64
It has ABS
4 Wheel disc brakes
Bilstein shocks (they look old and original)
Check display box in front of rear vision mirror

I can't find any engine block or head casting numbers but the engine bay tag matches the stamped body numbers/letters inside the engine bay behind the motor/under the windscreen which reads: Bayerische motoren werke AG
Made in west germany
WBAAB320600857739

What is my car please? Any info would be great!

There is no ///M - 325i to start. There are VIN search tools you can use. The last 7 digits you gave result in a start, but must be manually entered

Sure there is. M-tech 325i. Which is what mine is amongst many others with the ///M badge on their cars.

You asked "what model is my E30?"

We have established that it is an M tech 325i. We also gave you the link to check your VIN, which confirms that your car is indeed an M20 325i coupe manufactured in October of 1986 with a Getrag 260/5 manual transmission, right-hand steering, and no catalyzer.

That, to me, seems to answer your question. Please be more specific in what you need to know and we will try to help. Getting smart and sarcastically calling me champion does not help me further understand what else you want to know.

True, my apologies....

Where and how did you get the information on my car?

Can you just tell by the chassis number I have given?

I used the last 7 digits of your VIN and the web tool to which witeshark provided a link in his first post:

BUT how do I know if it is a M-Tech model?
And is a getrag 260/5 close ratio and is my differential and LSD? It's stamped 3.64 only....

If it really matters that much to you to know if it is an m tech model (which earlier you confidently stated that it is, but now seem uncertain), then call your local dealership. They should be able to find the options using your VIN. Another option is to PM user Dirty Tool here on werkz. He has decoded VINs for members in the past and perhaps he could do it as a favor to you.

Sounds like your differential is not LSD. The way to tell is to look
for an "S" on the diff case. To get under there you probably have to jack up
the car anyway, in which case you can just turn one of the rear wheels. If the
other one turns the same way instead of opposite, you have an LSD.

Here are the gear ratios for your transmission: 3.83 (1) / 2.20 (2) / 1.40 (3) / 1.00 (4) / 0.81 (5) / 3.71 (R).

By the way, I don't know much about E30's, but all my searches through Google seem to imply that the M tech models were all 1991 cabrios
