if you ran a cone filter directly to the engine and bypassed the mas what would happen ? leaving the mas connected but not interupting the airflow. would this work, you would need to get cold air to the mas for best function right ? : B)
well idk but wouldnt it be better if u got the cone filter got rid of the air box and put intake piping from the cone to the maf sensor and took out the left high beam because if u got an air filter right on the engine i dont think that there would be enough air getting that far to the cone but idk im just expressing my opinion

The best thing to do is, yes remove the air box and run piping to closer to the headlights, attaching the filter here. Then use aluminum sheets and tin snips from Lowes, etc and build a heat shield to prevent the intake from pulling in any of the hot engine air. Removing the high beam would only help.
i've got my highbeams in the center holes and have a mesh over the headlight hole, the cone sits right behind the hole-so i already have that covered, if you had a straight pipe from the cone to the engine (moving the mas off to the side) then you would have direct air flow to the TB ? also i could line up the cone better behind the hole if i was using an aluminum pipe or PVC.
Use the PVC, but don't bypass the maf sensor. If you do it will run like dirt. This sensor lets the engine know it is getting enough air. I changed the air filter on my 1985 318i recently and did not completely reattach the maf to the throttle body. It would hardly start, let alone it ran like crap. Just pipe the cone into the maf w/pvc and you still need a heat shield.
