As im sure you all know there are about 8 billion different 3 series alone many of wich i am not compleatly familiar with, so i figured what better place to get some heads up then on a BMW forum ! Ok, so im interested in a 3 series something fairly sporty but not terribly expensive..... trust me i am under know dillusion that im going to get an M3 but i would like something sporty with the potential for upgrades and more speed . Any advice or thoughts would be much apprecaited. Thanks in advance.

I have been looking online at used BMW's and it seems that 15k tops is not unreasonable for a nice car..... preferably less. As for body style this is where the ignorance starts what is the differeance between the two, i would like 2 door but i dont know if that is even part of the differeance between the styles.

for 15k, i would suggest trying to spend nothing more then 13, so that you have 2 to play with and fix up the car if it has any problems and such.
I would suggest a nice E36 328iS, or possibly E36 M3 or E30 M3 for the more daring and loving BMW driver.
Or, you could take a less expensive route and get a nice E30 325iS(88-91), and you could get that for under 7k np, and you'd have a sufficiant amount of money to put into it and make it look real clean.
Personally, id get an E30 M3. BUt since you are new, no offence, Id suggest getting an E30 325iS(1989), and do some nice Rims, Shocks, Springs, Catback, Sways, and then some restoration if needed.
You could make such a sick, beatiful, pretty, amazing, spectacular 325iS witht hat kind of money...
hope that helps, also, an nice E36 325iS would be good for you too, not as much power as the M52(engine code for the 2.8L E36 Engine) 328iS engine, but it does do well.
But id most likely suggest that if you are to get any non-M car, that you get something that is an 'iS', because you get those little goodies that cost a lot to convert to if you have a non-sport car.
just my .02

roadfly.com is your best bet for any E36, they have tons...
and Autotrader is second best to that options wise.
