I don't know of any reall "standard" problems with any of the E30's. As long as you take care of the car of course.

i vote like this:

318 over 325 (four cylinders less to take care of, and chain drive)
325 over 528i
528i over 740i
and anything BMW over any damn thing....mexi, brazi, or close to Germany made newer VW

honestly they are both good, and joshed is right, it's how you care for it. i have heard at least one person whine and bitch for every model car in every car line.....generally speaking it was same person that also wasn't taking good care of the car and performed service "whenever"

I agree, most BMW problems are owner inflicted. IE, lack of maintenance, being beaten, or both.

If I had to say a year, I would say shoot for 88-91. By then, they had all the problems fixed and you dont have to worry about those damn diving board bumpers.
