This is not true. I used to use a welded diff in autotest and initially it does not want to turn a lot but then when it flick it is definately happy to turn. It takes a little getting used to but when you finally get it the car will do anything you want it to. It will give you very near total control but it requires practice. But it will eat you your drive shafts, be warned!!!
Cones hate welded diffs!!!!
