weird starter problems

when i turn the key to start my car, the starter turns real fast, makes a real ugly sound, and after a couple seconds slows down and catches and the motor starts. any ideas? i think its the starter but i was wondering if there was anything else worth checking that might cause this. any help is appreciated.

Nope, starter is FUBAR, change it out before it eats your flywheel.

It sounds as if the starter solenoid is not engaging at first start (she just spins). I would look at replacing the solenoid or if your pockets are deep the starter (with a new solenoid).

Agreed. Josh, it isn't anything else, the solenoid is shot. Either get a new solenoid or starter, or leave it for a bit and buy a new flywheel too.
Sounds like there isn't much time, either.
