My factory Bavaria cassette player/radio has had the fritz and I'm finally in the mood to join the 1980's and get a CD player. I know this is a very poor basis on which to select an audio component however I'm particularly fussy about keeping a consistent "orange" display illumination on the dash AND I want something that looks a bit conservative (most of the players these days are IMHO grossly ugly).
I've seen a VDO player which is suitably qualified (German company; the player has that Teutonic austerity about it plus an "orange" display/read out ....and it's cheap). The only question that remains - how's it sound? Anyone have one or an opinion?
Second thought - has anyone done anything creative with the cassette holder in the console behind the hand brake - '85 318iA)? Is there anything aftermarket that replaces it? Seems as redundant as an 8 track so I need something in its place.
if the VDO player doesnt turn out ok, the alpine decks towards top end of the range allow you to alter the display lighting between a number of colours including orange it think. sound great too. only problem is they come in silver face only, black isnt available any more.
