Its been done before, but you would have to do some nice suspension work. The power you are gaining is not worth the weight the engine is going to add to your car, you will lose that E30 feel.

Black 4 door 1990 325i
15"x7.5 Ronal LS-wrapped in 205/50-15 Bridgestone Potenza G009
As enticing as this prospect is, the extra weight in the front will make the car handle like a front driver, and without any weight out back in the twisties, will make it squirrelly and all too happy to hang out the tail.
On a drag strip, great. But honestly, just drop an 8cyl in there if you really want the bigger engine, or just hop up your six.

Changed the car's name, now it's - Roxanne -1985 325e
sounds all good, but that engine is way too problematic and heavy for the e30.

that is my next swap i would love to get my fingers on........
you will have to have a custom header fabbed up and also plan on cutting into the car in places to get it all to fit. it is a project for sure........
but they are all correct about the weight distribution, that arse will become super sloppy......however......lighting up an E30 off the line and around corners would look rather funny, esp. if you left/put 318i badges on it

I agree she would be nose heavy and hey, it is tough enough to work on the M70 in a E32 engine compartment let alone a E30. As to problematic, my 1988 750 has 200,000 miles on her and she runs great and uses no oil.
Go to vRoadfly.com and then the E32 messge board. there is a post there by KW90735il that will lead you to a E32 data site and at that site is a piece on putting a v12 into a E30 as well as a picture of the V12 in a E30.

so true, last thing i'll do is upgarde the engine, so far did the basics and my sentiments are ...
- hot air intake K&N cone filter
- big six afm used
- 5.0 injectors
- # 173 ecu
- JC chip :P
- Accel coil

I second the M5 engine option. It's been done to an E46 (Hartge E46 V8 conversion, appeared in Car & Driver very late last century, anyone remember?) and would provide better power, less weight and fuel consumption, and just generally a better experience. Yes, more weight would be involved, but shaving those useless extra 4 cylinders off there saves you in weight, not to mention size (its difficult enough working on the M20 in there, I wouldn't want to picture anything longer in it's place... the V8 would actually be shorter, just wider is all).
Now the problem becomes getting your hands on an unmolested M5 engine without shelling out megabucks.

ummmm the e39 is more a smaller engine i think overall in size. i dont know the exact dimensions of both engines, but the s62 produces more hp, and most likey has more mods for it too. just my opinion, it is a lot of grunt to tackle in such a small car. but can and has been done. both ways.
