What does the shifter feel like in general? how does it go into gear? Does it go in first ok? Could be the shifter.... also Loose in where the tranny or the shifter?

it goes into first no trouble but when i try to put it in gears 2-5 it feels as if there is nothing conected to the end of the shifter as if it is just freely moving. and the rattleing is in the trans approx. below the shifter. it is very loud but it seems to go away if you hold the shifter the rattleing seems to go away. and i have always had alot of play in the shifter itself......even when it is/was in gear
It Could be your shifter assembly... but it is kinda rare for that to be the issue..... sounds like your tranny.... you can source a nice used tranny for cheap...

ok so how do i get to the shifter assembly? i took out the entire ceter console and i cant get to nor can i see any of the assembly. all i can see is the shifter itself and the ballend of it. i cant see and linkage, i pulled back the rubber/foam stuff and i still cant see anything there seems to b a foam piece on top of my tranny that is hidding all of the assembly. do i have to remove the assembly to remove the trans mission or remove the transmission to remove the assembly?
Well as I posted before, I think you need a new box, I dont believe its anything to do with the shifter, drop the box, drain the oil, put a magnet in the pan youve drained the oil in to for 1hr and see how much metal it will pick up out of the oil, then you will say to yourself, Yea OK need a recon on this box or one from a breaker.

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!
right i understand that but i have a feeling that it is just the shifter assembly it is extremly loose you have to pull it almost all the way back to get it out of first and into neutral. so do i have to drop the trans to get to the shifter assembly?
ok well i figured it out i took it to class and put it on a lift and where the shift assembly meets the shift rod t the back of the trans was dissconected. the bushing that is supposed to be there is completely rotted away
thanks for the help
