as you may be able to tell by my name...i had an 84 318i before that was totaled when a big as suv hit me. But anyway i searched for a couple of months and found a 91' 318ic in near mint condition for $2.5k. The only things that i'm having trouble with is the check engine light goes on and off. Anyone have any ideas as to what couple be causing it to turn on and off? Loose wire somewhere?

Well done on your find I remember the SUV saga !!! as for the E/light sounds like a bad ground/earth or it may even be a loose battery connection/fuse.

Motronic Fault Codes.

and follow the procedure in the Motronic 1.3 section to read the codes.

By God's grace, the only times I've had the check engine light come on in my 91 318i are when a vacuum hose detached from under the rubber air intake boot, and when either my fuel or main relay were starting to go.

i had a problem with my engine light coming on i just bought the reset tool and all lights went back to normal

Thanks for all the feed back. The light hasn't come on at all today but i'll check all of your suggestions and let you know if they helped. Glad to be back on this forum, lovin the bimmer lifestyle
