Timing Belt - BMW Forum

I just ordered a Hayne Repair manual for my e30.

I am thinking of doing the timing belt, tensioner and water pump myself.
Has anyone done this on their own ?

Outside of regular tools - I hope there isn't any BMW specific tools like you need on the newer Bimmers.

My car has 188,000 miles I just got it and I have no idea when the last maintenance was done. So I don't want to drive it around until I do the timing belt and water pump.

I think most shops call for 3 hours - is that correct?

i have an 87 325 with 188,000 miles on it. i bought it with 177,000 miles. i was gonna do the timing chain and waterpump myself but b/c i was pressed for time i had it done. i did find out that u need to buy a specific water pump wrench for the job. prob. will be expensive. but check with some of the experienced owners. good luck.

The i motor is different from the B27 you have, and the fact that it's an AWD model may mean it's even more different than just i and e. I'm not sure about that part.

the timing belt/water pump is a straight foward job on this car, the tools you might not have are a 32mm open end wrench for the fan clutch and a 3mm allen for the rotor. Take your time, look at the location of everything before you tear it apart. Makes for a fun Saturday afternoon. If you need some pointers let me know. HTH
