Thoughts on putting a tow bar on an E30?

I was wondering if anyone has hooked a tow bar to their ride?

I'm under a bit of pressure to get some things done around the house and the capability of towing a smallish (6X4) light steel trailer would be handy. Nothing ridiculous of course like towing a caravan or carting cubic yards of crushed rock about.

I had a preliminary check under the back of my E30 and can't see any sensible anchoring points. I get the impression it might be bit more involved than it first appear. What's it involve?

What's more, I haven't actually seen any E30s around with a tow bar to have a sneak look. The local BMW wreckers get them regularly off dead BM's so they're out there. Maybe that's why they end up at the wreckers. (The 318i factory manual has a section on towing. Maybe it was about being towed.

At the end of the day, is this simply a bad idea? If so. I'll slap a tow bar on the wife's Mazda.

I think you were correct in saying.. the towing section was mainly towards "being towed.." not towing.. haha... anything is possible.. but it probably isnt worth your time setting it all up... because in my eyes... I see a lot of work has to be done welding your frame to something that can tow. I wouldnt want to put that much pressure on your frame either.. but thats just my thoughts on the idea... Good Luck.. and if you do deside to do it.. please post some pictures and or your thoughts afterwards...

IMO E30s are not designed to do any towing

i wouldnt do it unless i tracked the car. and in some places its required

Not true in any means.... The factory sell a towing package for E30's and my 325iT has one on it. I tow a small trailer for parts gathering when I'm home in Germany from time to time.

We in the US are fortunate that gas is cheap and are able to afford a second vehicle. Hence where a pickup truck comes in great USE. But in Europe you will be hard pressed to see a pickup unless it is a Toyota or a Nissan or VW caddy.

I have seen 740iL's towing 2 axle trailers into Nurburgring with there race car on the back.
