| Hi, I am considering buying a BMW 318i, 1985, 136k (low) miles, with power windows, ac, sunroof, little or no rust that I noticed (owned mainly in Texas and New Mexico). The clutch has a hydraulic leak since you have to pump it when you first get in. It runs, beyond that the owner states it needs a tuneup. It was last registered in 2003, so it has not been sitting that long I guess (carfax report).
I am going to take it to a mechanic to have it checked before I buy. What should I be looking for, as far as problems? Is this a costly car to own, and maintain? It would be my second car, and my first BMW. Are parts hard to get, and overpriced? The other car I have (which needs a lot of work to restore) is a 1973 VW Fastback, and it has been very easy to find parts for cheap. How are older BMW's in this sense? I want to learn how to fix cars, it is a hobby I am working on. Would this be a good car to restore and learn on?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! |
