Temperature Gauge

Hey guys recently my engine temp gauge inside my car has been flickering from cold to hot and recently it has gotten worse and doesn't give an accurate reading at all. Is this because of the sending unit on the engine? Or could it be the batteries on the SI board? Also, the gas gauge does not give an accurate reading but it doesnt flicker like the temp gauge..

Test by unplugging your temp sensor and shorting it to ground and watch the gauge, it should jump to hot and stay there and not move. You'll find it just behind your ignition cap and before your #1 injector, there you'll find two sensors that look the same. The one closest to the injector is for your computer and has two terminals the one next to it has only one, this is the sensor for your gauge.

Also depending on your year, check the main engine cannon plug for corrosion.

If these tests fail, your SI board could be causing the problem.

i have a 1984 325 and my temp gauge does not work either. i just got the car and want to make sure its not running to hot. where is my sending unit to do the test mentioned above? i followed the instructions above and there are like 4 plugs in that area, dont wanna ground the wrong one. thanks guys!!
