Sunroof Problem

On my e30, 1986 bmw I can open the sunroof by taking a allin rinch and turning it. when you try to open the sunroof with the switch it tries to open but does notin, the switch is working but some part is not working up inside the motor. Any ideas on what it could be? Let me know if anyone has the answer.

either the motor or the cables get locked up sometimes

if its the motor, fine I can replace it, if its the cables or whatever you said, how do I check those?

Not to familar with the sunroof mech but (and not trying to be a smartass either) would not turning the allen key, turn the pulley which the cable is attached to and thus open the roof? If so then the only fault could be the motor, motor can fail if not used very often. Remove the motor and bench test it by suppling it with 12 vdc and see if it turns. if it does then load down the motor by placing resistance against the crank. if the motor ceases to turn you have a faulty motor, if not then your cables should be lubricated.
