How do you find out what the code is for a BMW stereo? I have pulled it out and there's a # on the back. 1988 325 F70633471B

I tried calling them and was told the car must be present and they must remove the stereo. He said it will be around $50 bucks. I already took it out and got the # but they refused to give me any info over the phone. I found a 5 digit # written in pen on the front inside cover of the owners manual and even though it seemed to be a radio code [mix of #'s 1-5] but it won't work. Theres 2 BMW dealers in my zone but both are an hour drive. Looks like I'll be either putting in another stereo or getting a BMW stereo off eBay with the code for 1/2 the cost.

I thought maybe someone knew of another way, oh well.

THANKS!

Must be nice! I assume you know them or something? I'm new to the BMW world so I have no 'connections'. My stereo # is up there in the first post, in fact here it is again: F70633471B maybe you can call your dealer and help me out?

How would they do that? Anyway, it's worth $5 bucks to me regardles Heck, it may not even work? He had a high $ CD player in which he removed but also gave me the original stereo. I figured out the wiring and removed some splices for his CD harness. I plugged everything in where it goes and got it to power up but it says COdE on the LCD. Even the power antenna went up, on my Saab nothing works if it displays the code signal until the correct code is entered.

maybe the codes were the right ones.....but:

after you enter the wrong code three times it will require require a waiting period of one hour.... that is, an hour that the stereo is ON. after an hour then it will ask for the code again.

just by any chance you tried different (wrong) codes three times before you saw the 5 digit codes you mentioned, you have to turn on your stereo for an hour (i did it while driving so as not to drain my batteries or waste gas) not minding the 'wait' notice on it ... then it will ask for the code...

if the code you saw is right then it should work and shift to fm or cd mode if you got a cd in the bank.

I wish I had been more thorough to save you all that typing. I do know about the 3 tries then having to wait an hour with the stereo on. I was told that by the BMW dealer but didn't think to reveal that knowledge however I should have. I have done so and the code is not the correct code, I believe it's actually a zip code or who knows. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it, if not I'm just going to get another one. Thanks!
