I just recently purchased a e30 and when I put the steering wheel straight the wheels arent pointing straight. Its not by much but I cant drive like this. My question is do I have to take the rack off the knuckle or can I take the steering wheel off and try to do it that way? Sorry for the stupid question not used to working of bmw's or newer cars.
How bad is it? The car might very well need an alignment.
You can pull the wheel off and reposition it; but if the problem is in the suspension your just masking the issue. The wheel is usually held in place by a 22mm self-locking nut and washer combo. Just pop off the BMW roundel to gain access.
