I had this problem too. My steering wheel even would go off centre when i hit bumps. Took it to mechanic and he said the seals on the left side (of the rack) where blown, so was only getting power steering to right turns. The left side can drag. You have to get the rack overhauled (kit and labour around $430) or replace with a remanufactured rack ($450 Canadian plus labour).

Mark, I'm surprised to get a response after all these months. After I lowered my car, installed M3 lower control arm bushings and added new wheels and tires, the problem seems to have disappeared. I still am planning to install an e36 rack and pinion to give me less turns lock to lock.
Thanks,
Rick
