Starting issues on 85' 318i

So for some time now I have had some starter issues on my 318i.

It is very picky and somedays it will start anad somedays it won't. Just this last Sunday, I drove it to church and after church it wouldn't start.
People keep telling me different things.
Everytime it dies, I have had some friends help me push start it.

Whenever it doesn't start, I will turn on the ignition, and everything comes on, but the engine won't turn over. When the ignition is on, there is a "hhhmmmm" sound that is coming from around the tranny.

I am at a loss for what to do.

Any ideas?

Its going to be your starter, the silenoid seems to be out, I bet if you bang it with a tire iron it'll losen the silenoid and it will start.

yup sounds like a bad spot in the starter...next time it wont start bang on it...sometimes a long metal object and a hammer to it will rattle it enough...if it does, its the starter...
