Exclamation staring problem with 323i 1985

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and hoping someone can help me fix the problem I'm having with my car, a few people seem to have had similar problems but none exactly the same, this is the first car I've tried to work on myself so any help is greatly appreciated.
i brought this 323i a few months ago and it was running like a dream for about two months, then one day i was driving down the road and i lost all power and the the engine died, it was all very sudden with no sputtering or odd noises, it just died. i got it off the main road i was driving on and let it sit for a while, when i tried turning the key there were no lights on my dash, no battery light, oil light, check light, no gauges worked. i had power to everything else in the car like radio, power windows, sunroof, lights. i sat there for about 10 mins then tried again, the dash lights came back on and the car started, i tried to drive away and got about 5 mins down the road and the same thing happened, this happened a few more times before i decided to get the car towed home. since its been home i havn't managed to get it started once, i have had the dash lights come on but as soon as i turn the key to start they die and the car just cranks and doesn't fire up. i'm not really sure where to start looking, if anyone has any ideas i would love some thoughts

Hey Mate,
Have you checked all fuses? Was the Temperature Up when it died suddenly? What sounds do you get when Turning Key to On position? Have you tried giving it a few pumps, then Cranking it over with Accelerator Flat to floor? What happens when you do this?
Let me know
