Sputtering 1982 320i - BMW Forum

My 1982 320i exhibits poor running after warming up. For the first 15 minutes, or so, it runs great (from a cold start). Then, it starts sputtering, near stalling and sometimes backfiring when under acceleration. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor button are brand new. What would cause the car to run so great cold, then begin to sputter and not accelerate after warming up? Help is appreciated, as I need to get the old girl running!

We've just fixed a somewhat similar problem on a 320 - The inlet manifold was leaking air on the wrong side of the air mass meter. Only found it becuase my dad happened to put his hand on it.

yours sounds much worse than ours though - ours was idling badly, with reluctant pickup under acceleration - basically running lean.

...and now, the $@*@^@# stupid thing idles at 3500 RPM and refuses to kick down...the fun just keeps on coming with this car...
