I have a 1989 325i convertible. The needle on the speedometer stops working from time to time. If I tap the panel, it usually starts working again. Otherwise it just starts working for no apparent reason over time. The odometer stops when this happens as well. Does anyone know what causes this? Is there a quick fix?
Along the same lines, the light for the speedometer goes off every now and then as well. Is these problems related?

Does your radio still work when your speedo stops? the radio and speedo are on the same circuit in my '90 convertable, and the fuse used to vibrate loose in the engine compartment on me from time to time causing approx. the same problem.
It could be the speed sensor in the diff or a dry joint in the cluster or the speedo head itself try cleaning the diff sensor first they’re easy to get to and are normally cover in swarf
