Speedo problems

Just recently got an 83 320i that has a few issues. Anybody have any idea why the speedometer would oscillate above and below your correct speed until we hit about 45-50, then it settles down and is fairly accurate?

We bought the car for my son to run around in but he's freaked out by not knowing how fast he's going....

your speedo cable is binding at lower speeds... typical in older cars.

you can try to disconnect it and patiently spray the element with WD40 or other lubricant; or replace your cable.

Thanks for the quick response! I kinda figured it would be the cables - which 1 is more likely, upper or lower or should I just replace both?

Likely best to just replace both.
