Speed sensor (odometer) issue

I recently bought a 88 325is with considerable mileage, what sounds like a valve tap, and what seems like a bad catalytic converter....

Also the odometer never worked.

The first move I made was to replace the timing belt (the car sat for 3 years before I got it) in which i figured i could check the speed sensor... but everything seemed fine with it (from what i could tell)

is this a normal issue? are there any aftermarket parts that i don't have to dig down to the flywheel to install?

something i didn't think of until i looked through other posts (i just signed up to this forum) is that the actual meter might be faulty... any simple ways to troubleshoot either of these potential problems?
