Well this is just a little pet peeve of mine, but on my 1988 325i convertible my spedometer has been off 5 MPH. Anyone have a clue of how to fix that? Sometimes I don't know if I'm speeding or going to slow. :P

Find one of those roadside radar trailers that tells you your speed and see what is says compaired to what the speedo in the car says. This is how I found out my E30 speedo reads 4mph faster than I'm actually going. As far as a fix for it, I don't know how to.

Are you still using stock wheel and tire measurements? If you get anything smaller, your speedometer will read high. Shouldn't be that high, though.

Haha, my speedometer -doesn't- read. So... yeah. :P I'm trying to get that fixed of course, I'm going to have the mechanic do it while he's instaling my new clutch kit in the next few days.

There is a way to "manually" adjust the speedo, it's not an exact science, but it does requires removal and disassembly of the speedo cluster. I wouldn't suggest doing this due to the number of parts and screws needed to be removed and put back, however, if you want to try to tackle this, let me know and I'll post how.

try this:
hold down the odometer button
at the same time turn your key to position 2 (1= off 2 = electronics 3= start)
then let go of the odometer button

duno if it will fix anything but maybe

The reason that everyone's speedo is off by the same amount is because of German law - mfgrs will receive heavy fines if the speedo under reports speed. As far as I know, all of the Deutsch mfgrs overestimate speed. BMW consistently does by 3.6MPH or 5KPH.

No easy "fix" for it.

Ah, someone else reads Bimmer Magazine. This question was adressed in this months issue.

So was my letter, small potatoes, but its kinda cool to be published in such a great mag...

With those E30 speed senders you're lucky it even tells you a speed. It'll probably go out soon and you'll have to get a new one. When I did the switch it was pretty much dead on accurate.

What I'm wondering is how all y'all figured out that your speedometer readings were deviant, or by how much, furthermore. A lot of side-by-side driving (read as: "competitive racing")? Track runs?

DISCLAIMER: I don't yet actually drive a BMW. Currently, I proudly drive a '93 Volvo 940, the inspiration for my love of RWD cars.

I thought I was the only one...

I have an 87 325 is and I noticed 2 weeks ago that the spedometer was off by about 5 miles also. And then I wanted to see how hard it was to install a cd player in my car.(If anyone knows how it would be a big help.) I took out the orignal tape deck and now my spedometer doesn't work at all. The Tacometer stills works though, does anyone know what cold be causing this?
