A Ci is normally a convertible, although they just badged them as 325i's with E30s. It can mean coupe for E46es, case in point, the 328Ci isn't a convertible. The X does mean all-wheel drive, but the i just generally denotes the engine trim model.

The 325e/s denotes that the engine is an M20B27, which is the economy motor. It has a few more pound-feet of torque than the M20B25 (325i/s), but way less horsepower. It also has a really low redline and a taller differential; all of this keeps the gas mileage higher than the 325i.

The 325 (with no letters) is basically a 1984-1987 325e with fewer options. I'm not sure what those would have been, but I have a 325 (again, no letters), and I would guess that things like a power sunroof and power locks came standard on the 325e. It has the same engine as the e and es, and in 1988 it was cut from production altogether and BMW just sold the 325e in its place.

ok cool!

but wht does the "s" mean then, is it just a better engine???

318i M40 4 cylinder 113 HP 188 km/h 1987 - 1991
318is M42 4 cylinder 136 HP 202 km/h 1989 - 1991

the only difference in those two is the "s" and the engine is different, what does the M42 have that the M40 doesnt which makes it produce 23 more hp??

Around the 88 89 year, the s in 325is meant a slightly higher trim. There was a lower front air dam and a painted rear deck spoiler. Some interior trim too and power sunroof

Not completely true.
I have a 1991 E30 318i with a M42. 1991 was th eonly year they put an M42 in the 318i i believe.
S also generally has a lip in the back and is a 2 door.

S means Sport. the body was a bit different, but the suspension and balancing were a little better on the S models. the I is for fuel injected.

To my knowledge (not saying anyone is wrong, just stated my knowledge):

E -- Eta - Low reving motor, made for fuel economy
I -- Fuel Injected, more of the luxury sports car model, not as good fuel, etc..
C -- Convertable model of the I. I have yet to see a ETA convertable, but havnt looked.
X -- All wheel drive, only seen it in Xi
S -- I.E. 325 Es stands for the sport model

Not sure if I am 100% correct, but thats my understanding of the meanings.
