So I broke a rocker arm

I've heard different things as to how to replace this rocker arm. It's on my '88 325is, the #2 piston, intake valve. The arm snapped clean in half, so theres still some arm leftover on the pivoty shaft dealy. I've heard that I would have to pull the head to fix this. Then again, my dad said the most I would need to do is take out the camshaft. The Hayne's manual says I just need to remove a tab that holds the sucker in. Anybody have a good write-up, or just flat out know and would care to explain?

well ive never done it myself and id have to go study some pictures to tell you how its done but i know to pull the cam you have to pull the head. You cant just pull the cam out the top like some 4 cylinder engines.

Some good news and bad news.

It can be done by loosening the valve adjustments and pushing the rockers of the cam lobe, then pulling the rocker shaft out the front.

The bad news is 25% will cause valve damage doing this with the head on the engine. Heck I have seen the valves bent doing this with the head on a bench.

I would suggest a real shop.

Some projects are best left to the mechanic.
