Sluggy Acceleration

Hi Guys,
Just bought a BMW 323i 1984 Model to use as my daily driver, but kinda like it so want to fix a couple issues.
Seems to be really subtle acceleration to about 4000rpm then takes off.
I have the 4 speed auto, and the car is stock as they come.
Wanting some hints on fixing acceleration problem and any other tips to increase performance (cheap ones)
Also latley have noticed oil in my airflow meter and a puff of smoke on initial start-up, so my thinking is valve stem seals, but oil in airflow says rings are cactus... any idea's???

snpower is an unknown quantity at this point
I don't know much about that year car but I recently experienced sluggish acceleration in my '90 and it ended up being the Throttle Switch adjustment.

the power band kicks in for me around 3500...maybe your "sluggish" is just the "pre-powerband"

just an idea

Just replaced air, oil and fuel filter, pump seems noisy, seems to be a bit better in high end acceleration but still like a grannys car till 4000rpm
