Scored a 1989 325i

I just scored a 325i at a very awesome price (double digits). Its from a friend, the only catch is, it does not run, and they dont exactly know what theyre doing. But I am told it was "Something about the compression being low" so the first thing that popped into my head was BHG, and i could hope for it. Originally I was told it was an oil leak, which would be much more of a hassle for me than a BHG.

Any way I bought the car, the price was just too right. Where should I start working on this car, how would i start?

Should I pump the gas tank (its been sitting around for awhile and im pretty sure gas goes bad)

Should I try to start it and see what happens? Ive looked up prices on a new head gasket, and I am not impressed, the head gasket looked like paper for $100, I used to be into Supra performance (mk2) and I loved the Metal Head Gasket, does such a thing exist for a BMW. Actually, scratch that, the other one will work fine, I just need to get this thing running.

Any tips would be nice.

Start by draining the tank because gas does go bad. Get some new plugs and oil and fluids so that when you do get it running, nothing is binding and it runs properly. Try starting it. Does it turn over? Does the check engine light come on? Make sure all the vacuum lines are tight, and make sure the starter and solenoid are good, or else it won't start no matter what. Also, if the air mass flow sensor is bad, it may not start. Be sure to eliminate all the things that would cause it to not start before trying to get it started.
