288 is pretty aggressive.. 272 is better for street by far IMO

I live my life one quarter mile at a time, and for those 23 or more seconds I'm free.
also i forgot to mention, a lot of people dont know much about cams. Cams dont actually gain you power unless you just increase the lift. All cams do is shift the power band up or down. A 288 will shift your powerband pretty high up, Personally i think the e30s powerband is the exact desirable type. Got a bump down load, beefy in the middle and kick in the end before it dies down.
Really a 288 isnt that good for a stand alone mod, it needs to be accompanied by a ported and polished head, extrude honed manifold, new exhaust, and of coarse, a new JC chip.
I wouldnt go more than a 272, because that mainly just gives lift, but not to much of an advancement of powerband.

I will send my head to get ported and polished and my intake to get "extruded honed" if I get the cam. I have a chip and a fully custom cold air intake. Planning on designing a custom afm to maf conv. this summer. No exaust line or header in plan.
I would consider a 272 but I have a deal on a 288 (250$). I dont care for the idle. It is not my daily driven car.

supposing a stock m20b25 is around 175-180 with a chip. I see it this way:
port, polish 3 anglee valve job and Honed+ 8 HP (375$)
Cam 288 + 8 HP (250$)
Custom sport intake + 3 HP (100$)
afm to maf + 8 HP (100$) (lots of hours to devellop it)
Head bolts and Gasket kit (125$)
Valve spring if needed (tons of money )
______________________________
Total 27 HP of gain so about 200-205 engine hp.
for about one gran! not so bad?

opinions, questions, ideas, insults? [/b][/quote]
a chip such as AA or conforti is only good for about an extra 3-4 peak hp even though it will gain around 10 lower in the powerband. a MAF will most likely run way over $100, especially with dyno tuning, i think KC Ron Carter did a MAF conversion and it ran him around $700-$800. i cant say whether or not all the headwork will yield 8hp, but i have a feeling the M20's out-dated 2valve/cyl design isnt going to respond as well as you think to these modifications. if it were me, i would save every last penny and put it toward a M50/S50 swap, because the SOHC 2v/cyl days have past. a M50 will out shine a M20 in every way and has much more potential. the M20 is a poor motor to modify, and some people feel putting money into it is a total waste.
I guest your right. When you put it that way, my engine is running fine right now so I should concentrate on suspension mod and other stuff. I never baught this car for the engine anyway. Baught it for the feeling of driving this baby!
Also, to be honest, I dont know a sh** with BMW engine. Like you said, 2 valve per cylinder days are long gone (take that GM!). The engines I know are Nissan engines. I has already been done but a SR20DET (japanese version of the 240SX engine 2 litres turbo) in a 3 serie seems very nice to me!
By the way, about the afm to maf conv. I'm a electrical/computer engineer. (well, in 160 days actually!) Believe me, this is feesable with a Nissan MAF (50$) connected to a controler board (60$) connected to the motronic. The tuning would be done not on the dyno but at WOT with the signal from the O2 sensor (read with the controler board again)
I will start the devellopement late this summer..... when my bimmer will be in better shape than right now

i didnt mean to sound negative or shatter any hopes, if you want to gain a little extra power then you could get it with a few hundred dollars, but anything substantial or in the 200hp range just isnt feasible with a M20, especially since a s50 makes 240hp stock
