Hey, i have an old 318i (84), but i have been wondering about putting an S14 (E30 M3 engine) in it. I figured it should work. but i figured i would check. And what things would i need to do to make it work?
M Technik is absolutely correct. When you look at it from the side, there is no reason why you should be doing a generic swap if the model is available for sale. I could see the point in SR20 swap for a 240sx for example, simply because its a direct bolt in, and sylvia is not available in united states. If you calculate the kind of money you are going to put into that swap, and think about how little you are gonna get back from it, if you to sell it or crash the car, it is really much easier to buy M3 up right and enjoy a much better car from ground up.

you can also think that way, but i believe it's simply based on how much passion you have for the car. IMO, doing an s14 in a non-m e30 is just a waste of money. I'd rather just do an s50 engine swap. Surely, the s50 engine swap depreciates your car in value, but what value that does increase is your sentimental value. So it all just depends on how you view your car.
As a BMW tech I can tell you a couple of thing S14 is based on a M10 so it will fit thew injection system is quite simple and wuldn't takea great deal of wiring in if you had all the wiring with the motor. But a E30 M3 was almost an handmade vehcile the shell is fully seam welded and strenghten the whole steering and suppention is modified the brake are all from an E28 and the whole drive train clutch, gearbox, diff and rear axle are uprated to take the extra troque. So buy an M3 is the best option I think. I wouldn't take it on myself.
