RPM Gauge dead

I've been doing a new dash install job on my '90 E30; did a test run two weeks ago to verify that all gauges were working and they were. Today I was at it again trying to put all of the remaining trim back in place and I discovered the battery was dead. Didn't think much of it - the car has hardly been run all winter. I jumped it with my truck and in the process of working on the trim I realized that the RPM gauge was no longer working. I checked fuses 10, 12, 21 per Bentleys and soaked all the harnesses on the back of the instrument cluster with DeOxit. Not sure what else to do other than check for ground and continuity; wanted to hopefully get some advice as well. Thanks.

PS the speedo may be dead as well; I can't drive the car right now to verify.

you might have caused shock damage to the car when you jumped it, thats why your not suppose to jump Bmws and mercedes with another car, get another battery pack and regular charger for now on, and check all other electrical stuff cause you might have messed the ecu and other stuff up as well. Hope it all goes well for and if you didnt that great and you might just have a loose connection from putting the cluster back in.

Your S.I. Board runs the gauges, that indeed runs on rechargable batteries, they drained just enough to render tach function useless, it may recharge if you let car sit for about 24 to 48 hours with charged battery.

very common problem,

I experienced gauges that worked a bit longer and longer as I let the car sit (longer and longer),
this was due to my error by not charging S.I. Batts prior to intallation..

I'm actually experiencing a similar problem. Only my car never went dead. I swapped out a battery i had in it for a stronger one, and now my tach/econometer dont work. However, when I turn the car off the tach needle does jump and go back to zero. Any ideas??
