I drive a sweet little 1989 325i and I just got the windows tinted but now I face the problem of seeing out the back window at night---and lately the reverse lights haven't been comming on---I believe they were working just a little a while ago--I think they come and they go--right now there gone--THE BULBS ARE NOT BLOWN...I'm pretty sure it's just not connecting with the gear shifter (it's a manual by the way) because if you wiggle it just right the reverse lights will come on for a second----how would I gain access to the contact in the rubber shifter boot under the leather boot around the base of the stick?

a solution to this would be cool---let me know...

BMW@JMU is an unknown quantity at this point
My reverse lights used to do the same thing. There is a reverse light switch on the passenger side of the transmission. All I did was better secure the wires on it by getting some needle nose pliars and crimping the end wire connectors. They work every time now. I don't know if that's your problem but it couldn't hurt checking it out.
