Is there an antenna that I can retrofit on my '87 325? I'm looking for a non motorized one to replace. Mine is starting to bend and the motor catches and makes a gawd-awful racket.

God awful racket, eh? I recently worked on a Toyota that had a messed up automatic antenna, and I didnt know it when i first turned it on, and when I did, it made a god awful noise for like a minute, and Im sittin there in the car going what is that noise? You can probly find a properly working one at a junkyard, they have a special thread on connector thats proprietary, and I dont think you can get a different antenna for it. Of course I could be wrong. You can also turn it on, and let it extend completely, and then disconnect the ground which is close to the actuator, and thatll render the motor inop whiuch will get rid of the god awful racket. if I remember right, its a 10mm bolt.
Go to the boneyard and look for hirschmann antennas in any 80s european car. The hirschmann unit is very robust, worth saving, and very easy to work on. There are plenty of DIY online to assist. Typically, you can find enough hirschmann's to pull the working parts and interchange them. While you can buy a replacement mast, you might get lucky enough to find a clean, unbend mast. I was able to replace my cheap aftermarket power antenna with what was originally suppose to be on the car for about $20 which a new one runs $150. Works like a charm and maintains that original chrome antenna.
I just looked on AZ Autohaus and a new Hirschmann mast runs under $20, so I'm probably just going to replace it with that, along with the rubber grommet/gasket thing that has wasted away in this Southern heat. I'm going to continue my search for a different type of antenna though, something a little more low-profile and non-motorized.
whats good a small antenna, preferably in black too. i have my antenna disconnected in the rear as i dont listen to AM all that much so i would either like to replace it with a discreet antenna or no antenna.
good lookin tho. i just dont like the style.. makes it look like a radio controlled car lol

They make aftermarket antennas that mount INSIDE the car. My bud has an internal one mounted in the back window of his MR2. They actually work very well too.
