I got bored and made up some circuit boards, 4 boards one for each hole in the top of the dash. I need to put a couple of covers to block the light filtering back at you.

couple hours, just etched the boards myself and soldered away. the most amount of time was spent figuring out the layout and componet values.
You can get orange LEDs not sure if they are High output though
Cool thing with these LEDs is that the dimmer works to a certain level so you can dim them down a bit. I went with the blue as it matched the CD/MP3 lighting.
You can do it for a back lit dash also
any hints or tips needed just ask away, playing with the LEDs is pretty cool.
nice, i kind of like the looks of that, you should post up a diy for people like me who know nothing about how to make stuff like that work well

honestly you should have added more lights....the visibility looks kinda bad...when i did this to my previous cars i added another 12-13 bulbs (LED's) just because LED's are focused light and will not supply enough lighting...just a though but it looks good just needs more..

well the vis looks bad as it is a pic taken with my phone so the res is not that good.
As for the intensity of the lights 4 is more than enough, any more and it would be blinding in the vehicle. I used hi-intensity LEDs but if I used Lower level bulbs I would agree with you. Since there are only 4 main indicators on the dash speedo, tach, fuel and temp. the 4 LEDs focus very well on those gauges. I can get another cam and retake the shot for clarity if needed. Thanks for the comments though

yes and thanks for the ability to ask or hint
i have recently had to replace one bulb from the dash and it sort of snowballed, luckily there was a juckyard with a few of these, so i grabbed all the bulbs i could and they sort of poppped right in..however...
can we make a black light dash... meaning phosphorouse numbers and a phosporouse needle set to have the GLOWING BACKROUNDS. as i just dont like any direct lights...
which is why the orange/red is soo great... our eyes NEVER FATIGUE in red light...
which is why the red lights are mounted in every military submarine and fighter jets...and most other high end visual products...like our bimmers ..
but again the black light idea is a CAPITOL IDEA... if you work on that and sell it,,, we will buy it...and love you for taking our petty cash off our hands for your effort and ability...
thanks my engineering cronie... its been fun being your production manager...
