I own a 1980 BMW 323is. The rear left wheel makes a wierd noise when i'm driving. Anybody know what it is? I think it might be the bearings but i'm not sure.
What type of wierd noise? A squeel or a clunk clunk?
Bad CV joints are harder to tell in the rear, they will only make noise while going over bumps or something, the fronts however will clink every time you turn.

Spiff. you make awfully quick conclusions and statements for the man. he said it made a wierd noise, you fill in for him that his car squeeks. There are no less than 25 things that could be wrong in the rear axle area only. Let him say what type of noise it is first eh? :P

is it a groaning noise? does it only happen when the car is in gear, or at all times? does it happen at low speeds, high speeds, going straight, or turning?
You can hear the noise in a slow speed only. Its sounds sort of like the wheel is loose and is moving around. I also noticed that the wheel does not roll strait while driving.
LOL tighten the bolts to the wheel. This happened to me a few days ago... i heard noises for a few minutes then friends like, your wheel isnt straight, saying i was just doing some drift runs on my coarse i was liek oh hell my axles bent. But alas it was only loose bolts.

Hi, new guy here. I found this forum when looking for answers to the same problem. Here's what I've found out:
Limited Slip Differentials will sometimes make noise when turning hard at low speeds (since the BMW diffs are clutch driven, it's the clutches groaning) but this isn't always normal. If you have recently had the rear diff serviced or done it yourself "they" may have put in the wrong type of oil. Also there are additives you can put in LSDs to make them make less or no noise at low speed turns.
I'm going to replace my diff oil and put in some of that addative (assuming I can find it at the auto parts store) to see if that helps mine.
Found the additive at an auto parts store. Just a tube (4 oz) of additional goo to put in the diff. I may be imagining things but it seems to sound better already. I had the tube for a couple days but yesterday the sound seemed to be getting much worse so I couldn't wait any longer.
