Rear End 'Clunk' - BMW Forum

Just wondering where to look first,

85 325E. 5 SP. On acceleration, when I have just changed from 1st to R or the other way around, I hear a loud clunk. At first I thought it might be a rear caliper not letting go properly, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Any ideas where to look first?

It could be your driveshaft, bad joints maybe.

Is it as you shift or as you let the clutch out?

Sorry about just getting round to answering this, but I had an appendectomy, and my wife had a baby all within 24 hours! OY!

To answer the last question, It's a clunk when power is applied. Not necessarily when I let out the clutch, but on accel, decel or direction changes. It IS getting worse, so I'm at this point I'm just about convinced that it's the rear U Joint. CRUD! Can't crawl under the car to verify it yet (kinda' hurts the old incision.) I suspect, however that we do have a new (used) drive shaft coming.

Is there any other way to fix a rear U joint w/out replacing drive shaft? I only paid $600.00 for the car, so I'm going to have to weigh the cost of repar versus dumping the car at this point. New baby you know.....
