I agree ...it isn't a good look...it doesn't do much for me either but then I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to decoration.
One thing I think needs to be considered is context - I always associate that type of stripe with mid 60s - early 70s pretend "sports" cars (like a Ford Escort or a Capri...remember the hood securing pins and the larged blacked out patches on the hood itself? Yeech!). There would be more merit in having it on a BMW of that era.
The E30 design may now be old but it ain't that old-looking (in my very biased opinion). And it's too classy a car to mess with to that extent.
I think a racing stripe can look good, it's all about style. I personally like it to be centered or atleast symetrical. If you had a roll cage in there and stuff it would look a whole lot better. Don't make your car look like a race car and cops won't think you're a race car though...
I've always been more of a fan of sleeper cars anyway.
When I think of racing stripes I think of a white car with two mid-sized ones, like 3-4" side by side and centered. And not all shiney, has to look like a race car, not a show car.
Does anyone know where racing stripes come from? Who invented them?
get the m3 flag man it goes on the front drivers side of the car, that looks sick

actually with your car being they dark metallic silver that it is i think the black strip would look sick...one of the few cars it does look sick on i say go for it....if you dont like it take it off...simple as that...all you need is a hairdryer to remove it along with some Goo Gone...post pics if you do it im excited to see...
im not a huge stripe fan and would prolly never do it but if i see it and it looks good props to you
