well like i said, i am finally starting on my project and still not sure if i want to put a new motor in or not. it all depends on how bad the internals look on the current engine. Today i managed to get it into the garage and drain the coolant, oil, and take off the bumper and hood.

update for the days progress: all wires have been marked and removed from the engine, all hoses and lines have been removed, the only things left is to separate the engine from the tranny and take off the exhaust manifolds then the engine will be on the stand. currently i am debating with myself as to should i remove the tranny from the car and clean it up and check all the gears.
^ just do it cause now that you have thought about it and if you dont it is gonna go out

update on todays progress...starter is removed, the exhaust is finally disconnected, now all that is left is to take out the 4 bolts holding the tranny to the engine. i will try to take a few more pics tomorrow as the engine is being lifted out of its home.
Ya!!!, my engine is finally out of the car.now i need to remove the 2 stubborn exhaust manifold bolts then they can come off and then i can take the head off. here are some pics after i got the engine out since i forgot partway thru the removal progress.
OK.... after doing some measuring and calculating, i found that the engine is a 2.7 liter which threw me off, so i did some research and found the block came out of a 325e and the previous owner had done a engine swap but transfered the intake to keep it carburetored. there are 2 head gaskets which are the same design but one is a tad bit thick and cost bout 20 dollars more so i think ill go with the thicker one because the valves go way too close to the piston to feel safe with the thinner one.
