powersteering leak - BMW Forum

I have a 1992 318i convertable Mtecnic with only 56k and fluid coming out of the drivers side steering rack boot. Should I attempt replacing it myself? Has anyone had luck doing it themselves and has any tips?:

you're in luck!... the rack and pinion is out in the open and a relatively easy job to do.

trying to replace just the end seal is a pretty much a thing of the past(don't even know if you can find just the end seal anymore...), and it will be easier for you to replace the whole rack and pinion assembly-doesn't hv to be brand new; remanufactured ones work just as well

search the 5 series forum... i remember a discussion about a GOOD and cheap source for remanufactured rack-and-pinion there.

or PM jpmoorman... he would know ;-)

*TIP: if u are doing the work yourself, you'll need to go for alignment after you change the steering gear. otherwise, ur tires will not be "on track"
