Power window issue

The RHR window dd not work when I got the car, I swapped the swithches in the console first with no effect. I removed the door trim and disconnected the wiring to the motor, I could make the window go up and down by directly applying voltage in either direction to the two pins going to the motor. Unfortunately this worked just a few times and then the window would not go up anymore and the motor was red hot.

I changed the motor and now have one which allows the window to speed up and down if I apply voltage directly to the motor as detailed before.

Unfortunately with the switch fitted it will only go up, never down when using the switch in the RHR door. When I try to use the switch up front nothing occurs at all; i.e. it will neither go up or down.

I have substituted switches in all positions and still have not resolved the issues. Nb there is 12v available in the white connector both up front and in the actual door.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Undo the wiring harness that's inside your B-pillar and do one of two things:

1. repair the wiring breaks I suspect are there or
2. replace it with a more intact one.

I've done both rear harnesses on my 91 318i sedan with salvage yard finds and am glad to report windows and door locks work at least 95 percent of the time. The point of failure both times was frayed/broken wiring inside the rubber grommet between the B-pillar and the rear door.
